Forget rehearsed answers. The students who hit Band 7 in Speaking follow a simple 4-step method that sounds natural to the examiner. Here's exactly what they do.
Speaking is the IELTS section students fear the most — but it's also the easiest to improve in 30 days if you stop memorising answers. The examiner can tell within 10 seconds whether your answer is your own. Here's the method our Band 7+ students use.
The 4-Step PEEL Method
- 1Point — answer the question in one short sentence.
- 2Example — share a real, specific story from your life.
- 3Explain — add why it matters or how you felt.
- 4Link — connect it back to the question.
Part 1 — Personal Questions
Keep answers 2–3 sentences. Add one real detail to every reply. If the question is "Do you like cooking?" don't just say yes — say what dish, when, and why.
Part 2 — The 2-Minute Cue Card
- Use your 1 minute to write 4 short notes — not full sentences.
- Structure your story as past → present → future.
- Don't worry if you go off-topic — fluency matters more than perfection.
- Keep speaking until the examiner stops you.
Part 3 — The Discussion
This is where most students freeze. Use linking phrases like "On the one hand…on the other hand," "That's a tough question, but I'd say…" Give yourself 2 seconds of thinking time — silence is fine, fillers like "umm" hurt your score.
30-Day Practice Plan
- 1Week 1 — Record yourself answering 5 Part 1 questions daily.
- 2Week 2 — Do one cue card per day, record and listen back.
- 3Week 3 — Add Part 3 discussion topics with a study partner.
- 4Week 4 — Take 2 full mock speaking tests, get feedback from a trainer.
