Most students lose marks not because they don't understand, but because they don't predict. Learn the active listening method that catches every answer.
IELTS Listening rewards predictors, not passive listeners. The audio plays only once and questions are paraphrased — if you wait to "hear the word" you've already lost. Here's the method that takes you from Band 6 to Band 8.
The 30-Second Pre-Read
- Before each section, read all questions in 30 seconds.
- Underline key words — names, numbers, places.
- Predict the answer type — is it a number? A date? An adjective?
- Guess synonyms — if the question says "begin," the audio might say "start."
Section-by-Section Strategy
Section 1 — Everyday Conversation
Easiest part. Focus on numbers, addresses, names being spelled out. Write answers immediately — don't wait for the next question.
Section 2 — Monologue
Map-based questions appear here. Trace the route with your pencil as you listen. Words like "turn left," "opposite," "next to" are your anchors.
Section 3 — Academic Discussion
Speakers often change opinions mid-sentence. Listen for "actually," "but," "although" — these signal the real answer is coming next.
Section 4 — Academic Lecture
Hardest section. Note-taking is key. Write down only nouns and numbers — skip articles and adjectives unless they're the answer.
Daily Practice Routine (30 minutes)
- 110 mins — BBC 6 Minute English at normal speed, no subtitles.
- 210 mins — One IELTS Listening section, full focus.
- 310 mins — Review wrong answers and write the trap words.
